Sir Peter Hall (1930 - 2017)

Tue 12 Sep

We are deeply saddened by the death of Sir Peter Hall, our Director Emeritus and founding Artistic Director.

One of the most celebrated directors, producers and impresarios in Britain and internationally, Peter Hall was the founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company and former Artistic Director of the National Theatre. In his prolific career spanning over half a century, he helped found Rose Theatre Kingston in 2003 with a vision to create theatre that is vibrant, engaging and accessible. He stepped down as Artistic Director in 2008.

At the Rose he directed an unforgettable production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Judi Dench in the role of Titania. Executive Producer Jerry Gunn said: ‘I'm very saddened to hear this news. Peter Hall was a giant in British Theatre. The Rose is indebted to him and his vision for the theatre.'

Robert O’Dowd, Chief Executive at the Rose commented: ‘Peter brought so much to theatre and opera, and the Rose would not be what it is today without his passion and energy in our early years. He will be sadly missed.'
