SpeakUp Solos

Critically acclaimed SpeakUp Theatre present an evening of female-led solo fringe pieces about living and loving in the face of adversity. Trouble and LOVE (Watching Madness) are two hidden stories that demand to be heard.

This fundraiser event aims to support SpeakUp Theatre in their run of LOVE (Watching Madness) at the Pleasance Courtyard from 31st July - 26th August.

Trouble

Written and performed by Lizzie Annis
Directorial input from Chase Brown

Jess has been moderately outrageous and it's not her fault. I mean, it is a bit her fault. Quite a lot actually. Still. Trouble invites us out to the pub for a night of good intensions, bad decisions and shambolic encounters.

By way of hot bartenders and old flames, Jess takes us on a journey across the prickly intersection between femininity and disability, and reminds us of the vital importance of a good sense of humour in relation to both.

This one-woman short play confronts the power of violent language and the terrible joy of being proven right.

Trouble has been developed in association with Little Match Theatre and the Lyric Hammersmith.

LOVE (Watching Madness)

Written and performed by Isabelle Kabban
Directed by Ruth Anna Phillips

'My mum threw a trifle at my best friend and that's when I first thought something was probably wrong.'

A mother. A daughter. An hour. A bond. Questions. Answers. Trifle. Tides. Refresh. Restore. Release.

A searingly honest and personal one-woman show investigating the complexities of loving someone with mental illness. This fast paced piece is a moving, funny and relatable insight into how it feels to care for someone who can't always show that they care for you.

LOVE (Watching Madness) was developed with the John Thaw initiative in 2018 and has since performed at the Drayton Arms Theatre, Tristan Bates Theatre and The Garage, Norwich. The show will be performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019 (Pleasance Courtyard) in association with The Actors Centre.
