Mark was Head of Lighting (1993-2003) at the National Theatre where his credits included Honk! (Olivier Award for Best New Musical) and Skylight (Olivier Award Best New Play). Theatre credits include The Fellowship (Hampstead), Private Lives (Bath & UK Tour), Blithe Spirit (West End, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, Toronto); Our Country’s Good (Nottingham Playhouse & UK Tour), The Duchess of Malfi, Richard lll, Arcadia, (Nottingham Playhouse) Sweeney Todd (Liverpool Playhouse); along with many drama and musical productions at Birmingham Rep, Bristol Old Vic, Chichester Festival, Charleston, Cork, Coventry, Dublin, Dundee, Edinburgh Festival, Hornchurch, Ipswich, Manchester Royal Exchange, Northampton, Paris, Plymouth, the Royal Court, Watford, West Yorkshire, York, the West End and Broadway.
Mark’s numerous opera and ballet credits include Madama Butterfly and Vanessa (Glyndebourne) for which he won the Knight of Illumination for best opera lighting, as well as many productions at Scottish Opera, Opera Holland Park, Welsh National Opera, Buxton International Festival, Garsington Opera, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet, London Children’s Ballet and overseas in Aarhus, Antwerp, Banff, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, Ghent, Helsinki, Houston, Kuwait, Los Angeles, Madrid, Munich, New York, Potsdam, Rome, Spoleto, Stockholm, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Toulouse, Vienna and Washington;
In New York he received a Drama Desk nomination for ‘Outstanding Lighting Design’ for Prometheus Bound and a nomination for a Knight of Illumination Award in the UK for outstanding lighting on Lulu at Welsh National Opera. His designs were part of the British team in the Prague quadrennial in 1988 and he was a finalist in the World Stage Design competition in 2013. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary fellowship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is the Deputy-Chair of the Association for Production, Lighting and Design.
