A tender and funny coming of age story that celebrates the joys and complexities of love, sexuality, friendship and family. On the cusp of leaving home, Max struggles to find her independence whilst caring for mum, Melanie, a former ballet dancer with MS. They are a tight-knit unit of two, but things are changing for both of them. When ‘posh-girl’ Ophelia turns up at Max's college, striking up an unlikely and passionate friendship, change comes quickly. And with it, confusion and hurt.
When We Were Normal is a tale of forging communities of care that cross the boundaries of class, queerness and generations, so we are particularly proud that this production has been entirely created by alumni from our Rose Participate community (Rose Youth Theatre, Rose Players, Players Plus and Players Perform). Every single person involved in this play (writer, directors, cast and crew) all found community and explored their creativity at some point here at the Rose.
