K-Pop: Turning a Hobby Into a Passion

Emmy Salim is a sixth form student who joined the Rose for work experience this summer.

I discovered my love for K-pop and K-dramas in 2018, aged 11. As many fans do, I was learning the dances of my favourite songs in my bedroom which soon developed into a hobby. Over the years this resulted in creating an Instagram page where I posted my dances and auditioning for my first dance group - a diverse dance community where we perform, film and post K-pop covers online, along with Hip-Hop, Commercial, Urban/Street and more.

"I love attending the Rose each year for the national K-pop competition"

I love attending the Rose each year for The National K-pop Competition, both as a competitor and audience member. Groups and soloists compete in categories including Korean dance, singing, original choreography and freestyle.

This led to joining the Rose’s Marketing and Communications team for a week’s work experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning the ins and outs of the theatre.

I also discovered that Kim’s Convenience, the play that inspired the popular Netflix sitcom, was hitting the Rose stage. The TV show provided me with some much-needed entertainment during the boring months of lockdown, and I cannot wait to see it live next year.
